The Women's Campaign

Labour Students' Women's Campaign exists to fight for women's rights and gender equality.

It exists because discrimination remains an issue. It exists because women continue to earn less than men over the course of their lives. It exists because thousands of women are victims of violent crime and domestic abuse. It exists because women are still under-represented in every aspect of political life.

The Labour Government has worked hard to combat this inequality and we can be proud of the successes so far:

  • The minimum wage - two-thirds of those who benefit are women, with around 1 million women gaining higher pay since its introduction
  • Constant work to reduce to reduce the gap between men's and women's earnings
  • Radical changes to domestic violence legislation providing greater protection for victims
  • Introduced legislation to get more women into Parliament
  • Increased maternity pay and leave

But there is still work to be done and our Women's Campaign strives to further the achievements already made. We:

  • fight discrimination against women
  • constantly work to promote the need for increased female participation in Labour Students and the wider political environment
  • call for increasing the number of women in Parliament and in other political structures
  • campaigned on sexual health - the "Sex, Lives & Politics" 2005 Priority Campaign prommoted the importance of sexual health, including women-specific issues
  • fight for women's rights abroad, most recently through the "Dignity. Period!" campaign in support of women in Zimbabwe and their current fight against their government to gain the basic right of sanitary protection
