The LGBT Campaign
Hi I’m Frankie, the LGBT Officer for Labour Students. The LGBT campaign is for anyone who defines as LGBT or lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans* and is a place for support.
As the elected representative, it is my job to support LGBT students and LGBT officers in their university or college clubs as well as run campaigns and work with other parts of the Labour Party to achieve full LGBT equality. This year, I want to work on getting LGBT issues into our education at university and colleges so that students study LGBT authors as well as see the diversity of people’s experiences as well campaign on the homophobic ban that prevents men who have sex with men (MSM) from donating blood for a year after sexual contact. For many, this is effectively a lifetime ban and isn’t rooted in risky sexual practice but is simply homophobia hidden behind a ‘scientific’ basis.
Labour has always been dedicated to LGBT rights and it is plain to see when we look at what we achieved whilst in government; the Labour government repealed Section 28, introduced the Equality Act, gave LGBT people the right to adopt and created civil partnerships amongst many other pieces of legislation that has pushed for full legal and social equality for LGBT people. Even when Labour hasn’t been in government, they have made big changes for
The Same Sex Marriage Act legalised same sex marriage in the UK in 2013 and it wouldn’t have been possible without Labour’s support and the campaigns run by LGBT Labour and Labour Students to ensure that marriage was open to everyone.
