Labour Students across Britain are preparing to recruit the next generation of students to be part of it. As thousands of students receive their A level or Higher results the road to University is clear for more than ever before. At University campuses new students can expect to find Labour Students setting out their stall and recruiting new members who share our values of equality, social justice and collectivism.

So why join Labour Students? Sarah Mulholland, National Chair of Labour Students said,

“I joined Labour Students because I wanted to engage with other young people who shared my values. Labour is the only party that has delivered on equality and the fight for social justice.”

We each have our own individual reasons but if you identify with our core values then Labour Students is the home for you. Labour Students has something for everyone where you can campaign, shape policy and meet like-minded students. We’re proud of our values, our campaigns and our organisation, but together we can go even further. Joining Labour Students means not only having a fantastic time but also changing both the country and the world we live in. Join us… and Be Part of It....

ZINASU have been heavily involved in the struggle for democratic rights in Zimbabwe and this event allowed the audience to hear first hand accounts of the situation, as well as a chance to share opinions on the power sharing deal in between Morgan Tsvangirai and Robert Mugabe. Stephanie Peacock, NEC Youth Rep chaired the event which heard from Clever Bere, ZINASU President and Brilliant Dube, ZINASU Vice President. The panel also included Andrew Gwynne MP and Tom Dykes from ACTSA. At this time of transition and hope the panel tackled a range of questions from the floor about the recent events in Zimbabwe.
Last weekend over 130 delegates from Labour Clubs across the country descended upon Labour Party Head Office for National Council 2008. What better way to get away from the pre-Christmas rush?! We heard from several high profi le speakers who then took a wide range of question from delegates. Hazel Blears MP, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government and James Purnell MP, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions were joined by Derek Draper and Richard Howitt MEP in giving key note speeches. Demonstrating our true campaigning might, delegates participated in a two hour phone bank campaigning in vital key seats to help secure a Labour victory at the next election. Delegates also enjoyed a much argued-for X Factor Final Party hosted by NEC Youth & Students Representative, Stephanie Peacock. Although this event divided the loyalties of many Labour Clubs there was no ill will the next morning as delegates cast their votes for the Labour Students Policy Forum. With almost twenty candidates contesting seven places, many first time delegates had their chance to hust and stand in this hotly contested election. The successful candidates – Richard Hincks (LSE), Georgia Elliot (Newcastle College), Jamie McMahon (Nottingham), Sarah Jones (Liverpool), Chloe Howard (Liverpool), Simon Darvill (Swansea) and Ralph Kirkwood (Strathclyde) -will now help shape the policy direction of Labour Students as we lobby hard for the policy changes we want to see. Congratulations to those elected. In addition this event was a chance for Labour Clubs to debate...

Eddie Izzard and Kevin Spacey are encouraging young people under 26 to take advantage of Labour’s free theatre scheme, whereby 618,000 free theatre tickets will be available to under 26 year olds in over 200 theatres across England. Watch Eddie Izzard and Kevin Spacey launch this great opportunity. The scheme, called ‘A Night Less Ordinary’, will allow young people from every background to attend some of the best theatres in the country free of charge. At the website you will be able to find the nearest participating theatre and then book your free tickets. Andy Burnham, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport announced this scheme at Labour Party Conference in September 2008 and since then over 200 theatres up and down England have signed up to offer free theatre tickets, including high profile and historic theatres such as the National Theatre in London and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford. Labour Students welcomes this scheme, and are proud that it is a Labour Government that has consistently widened access to culture. From introducing free entry into museums to allowing more young people to go to the theatre – it is Labour that is ensuring we can all access our shared culture and heritage. The Tories have already talked down the free theatre scheme on a number of occasions without offering any of their own ideas. This is typical of the Tories – when Labour introduced free entry into our museums and galleries the Tories...
