Meet your new Disabled Students' Officer

As part of our Liberation in Labour Students blog series, our new Disabled Students' Officer, Gabriel Phillips, writes about his plans for the year.

Hi everyone, I’m Gabriel. I’m a fourth year student studying Japanese at Edinburgh and I’m your new Disabled Students’ Officer. I was elected at National Council in December and I hope to be campaigning on a number of key areas this year.

Accessibility of Labour Students events: Students have raised concerns over the accessibility of past events, such as a lack of hearing loops in rooms or even something as simple as the lack of water during events. I’ll be working with the national officers to make sure that this is no longer an issue by creating an accessibility guide for planning future events.

A Social Media conduct guide: Bullying of Labour Students occurs online, sometimes by fellow Labour Students, and we can’t allow this to go on any further. We can’t pretend that this doesn’t happen. It damages people’s health and we need to hold people accountable for it. I want to work towards creating a Labour Students code of conduct for social media so that people will feel supported by Labour Students and so that there’s a proper disciplinary procedure in place for those that actively bully fellow activists.

A National Liberation month: Edinburgh Labour Students had a really positive experience of having a month dedicated to ambassador talks from the liberation caucuses. I want to provide clubs with the resources needed in order to host their own Liberation months, such as by providing club liberation officers with training so that they feel both comfortable and confident enough to host their own ambassador talks and organise their own events.

Hopefully I’ll be working with the other liberation officers, Rhys, Lydia and Sheri-Ann on these issues and more so that we can do some great campaigning! #Intersectionality

There’s a Facebook group for the Disabled Students Caucus which you can join if you’re a self-defining member. If you want to join, send me a message and I’ll add you asap!

As ever, if you have anything you want to chat about, feel free to send me a message and until then,

ありがとうございます!

Gabriel
p.s. If you ever fancy chatting about Japan or Pokémon, you know who to call!

Gabriel is the Disabled Students' Officer for Labour Students.
