Democracy Consultation

When we were elected as your national officers we stood on the promise of changing the organisation. In the time since a lot has changed; and we've made positive moves towards a better and more democratic Labour Students.

The single biggest reform we stood on and the strong mandate we have from you, our members, is to deliver ‘one member one vote’. That is why at our national conference we will be launching a consultation on how to implement this change, and are calling an extraordinary general meeting at beginning of June to pass OMOV for Labour Students elections. This means that from 2017 every single member will be able to participate in elections for Labour Students.

We know that previous reviews have been cumbersome and lengthy, but this decisive consultation on how exactly this key reform should be implemented will mean the first OMOV elections will be held in 2017 following ratification at National Council.

Extraordinary Conference

We’ll be holding an Extraordinary National Conference in order to pass the new constitution on the 4th of June. The conference will be held in Manchester and we’ll be joined by Alan Johnson leader of the Labour In for Britain campaign. Following the conference we will be joining Labour In for Britain in campaigning around Manchester as part of their voter registration drive. Tickets for this event will be free of charge, and will be available once the delegate deadline closes on the 1st of May.

Online Survey

Members can make submissions directly via an online survey which can be found here.

Listening Events

As part of the consultation on implementing OMOV we are asking clubs and our Liberation Campaigns to hold listening events that you can feed into. Club Chairs and National Liberation Officers have received further details on how to hold a listening event and you should get in touch with them if you’d like to organise one.

Regional Listening Events

We will also be holding three listening events between now and the end of April, one in London, one in Birmingham, and one in Leeds. The first of these will be in London on Wednesday 30th of March. We’ll be announcing the dates for the other events shortly, all members are welcome at any of these events.

Timetable for the consultation

- Consultation Begins: Labour Students Conference, Friday 26th Feb
- Consultation Ends: Monday 25th April @ 5pm
- Full proposals published: Friday 20th May
- Extraordinary Conference: Saturday 4th June
