The Disabled Students Campaign
Equality should be at the heart of modern life in Britain. Real equality of opportunity inspires individuals to fulfil their potential and the idea of fairness brings people together.
As Labour Students, we all have a vision of an equal, inclusive society where every citizen is treated with respect and where there is opportunity for all. This is the goal that our liberation campaigns strive to achieve. However, as little as 20 years ago, Britain was far from being a respectful and tolerant society and there was hardly anything in the way of legislation to protect minority groups from fear, intimidation and discrimination. Through the actions of progressive Labour Governments and Labour people, society is becoming fairer and more just.
Yet, discrimination remains an issue. Racism and homophobia are still serious problems in many areas. Women and people with disabilities are still denied access to services and opportunities. That's why our liberation campaigns exist. They work to promote the interests of particular groups in society who continue to struggle for equal treatment. And as autonomous bodies, they provide a safe space for these groups to meet.
The Women's, Disabled Students, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans campaigns are also a key strength of to the diversity of our movement. These campaigns remain at the heart of our organisation as they tackle discrimination in society and under-representation in the Party and in the student movement.
